1997E 1998E report date 09/18/96
EPS 1Q .14A .6E
2Q .00E .13E
3Q .02E .17E
4Q .04E .22E
.20 e .60e

REV 1Q 100.1A 103.E
2Q 94.0E 108.E
3Q 96.5E 111.E
4Q 99.4E 117.E
390.E 440.E

Initiating coverage w/ a LONG-TERM ATTRACTIVE RATING.
Giving the strong track record of the component bus. & the promise
of resurrection of the systems bus. and w/ the stock trading at
0.9Xbook, & .5X CTR, we believe that value oriented investors could
find SMSC stock attractive.
It is four page small print report, talking about bus. opty., product
line, etc.
I believe Rob./St. issud new report w/upwardly revised EPS in October.
If you recall ROb./St. was Inv. Banker involved in SMSC's sale of
system division to CS.
It is pos. that SMSC may achieve 40%+gross margins in upcoming 3&4 Q.
That would provide EPS of .35 to .42 per each Q.
Main concern: PC slow down; COMS agresive pricing on fast ethernet.

Regards,

N, Voloshin
