Dana is an editor of a text which is an authority on mineral systems and crystallization. To a large extent he standardized the minerals to about 1600 basic ones. Before the systems where very confusing. There are 17 issues of the manual. It is also called Cornelius Hurlbut's. A more modern system that "replaces" the reaction series of Bowen, would be the text Deere, Howie and Zussman. Modern mineralogy pays more attention to the concept of meta-stability to explain the existence of crystals that survive the crossing of the eutectic, and exist outside of their formational region of stability like diamond, perovskite and olivine. Many of today's authorities have broken with the past in structure and mineralogy and produce their own texts and explanations of rock types, minerals, structural forces and fabrics. A geologist trained in Canada prior to 1975 may be deficient in his understanding of geological tectonics, structural rules and rock chemistry. This would include most trained at Queens at any time :)
