Question for all you Jaz fans:

I can't help but think that this product ain't going to completely replace the hard drive soon, as some folks here seem to tout. My reasoning,

(1) it will apparently require 6-7 cartridges before one hits break-even with IDE hard drive costs for the same number of megabytes (at today's prices $399/Jaz, $100/cart, $359/3.2GB HD, all prices from computer mags). This is a HECK of a lot of disk drive space, how many people need anywhere near this much?

(2) Having 7 1-GB Jaz cartridges is NOT the same as having 7 GB in installed HD (1 or 2). If program 1 is on cart. 1, and program 2 is on cart. 2, you have to either (a) swap, or (b) have 2 drives. (a) loses major convenience and (b) bumps the price back up.

Portability is good, but if the price of a Jaz + 1 extra cartridge doesn't come down to the price of a 2 GB HD, then I can't see it penetrating the consumer market. For businesses, it may be a different story.

Comments, anyone?
