There has been a lot of speculation over the DEC/CPQ merger and whether it will get done. Most analysts seem to think CPQ struck a good deal in terms of price. Most seem to think they paid virtually nothing for Alpha technology. My question is does DEC think they are shortchanged or has their fundamentals deteriorated similarly like CPQ. Some DEC exec was quoted in the Boston Globe as saying that some customers have delayed orders until they analyze the effects of the pending merger. I have heard conflicting arguments over the Alpha technology. Some thinks it's lousy and will be replaced by Merced while others say it's light years ahead over anything in the market today. What's the real beef???? Furthermore, the Justice Dept. is analyzing some arrangement that DEC has with Intel on chip manufacturing. Does anyone think the CPQ deal has any significant impact on this agreement? Why should the Justice Dept. even care for that matter?
