Great questions.

I am not that excited about the semi-equipment side of the laser business. The semi-equipment makers trade in harmony with each other independent of the fundamentals of the specific company. UNPH is still pressing forward with their plan to "corral" all significant PHd's with practical photonics knowledge that they can commercialize. The strategy is paying off. I remember you took some "coaching" to take the plunge into TLAB at 55! IMHO, barring a "tech wreck" UNPH won't see the thirties again.

I am sorry I didn't get back to you about the VCSEL's yet. I have no news to report yet.

I reached my target price for TLAB and sold hoping to lock in some gain for 1998. (I am up over 30% with the rising NASDAQ and wanted to keep some powder dry for bargains later this year.) I also sold LU but plan to buy back after the split and subsequent drop. (Wishful thinking!)

I bought CIEN after the drop at 42.25 and will hold for a double and then move on. IMO, Gilder is looking too far down the "Information Highway". CIEN has real product for delivery this quarter. Real cash will line their pockets this year and their investors as CIEN is the only pure play optical systems leader. As far as I can tell, they are still on target for revenue in FY98. AT&T is still trying to certify them, but they could see some sales to T late in the year. Probably when that is announced I will get out!

Hey! Did you catch any of those El Ninio waves. I watched some surfers on the TV almost kill themselves trying to collect a $50K prize! I surfed once in Santa Cruz. (4 feet waves!) If I lived out there I would go everyday.

Make the jump to "Light Speed" and place your bets on the "Lord of the Photon", KK, CEO of UNPH. Just my opinion.

Regards
Stew
