RCN'S Mexican Cable Operation, Megacable S.A. de C.V. Wins Multichannel News International Award For 'Best Cable Operator'

Megacable To Be Presented With Multichannel News International's

Ground Breaker Award' On May 3, 1998

PRINCETON, N.J., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- RCN Corporation (Nasdaq: RCNC), announced today that Megacable S.A. de C.V., Mexico's second-largest cable company, has been awarded Multichannel News International's "Ground Breaker Award" for best cable operator. The MCNI "Ground Breaker Awards" honor companies from around the world which have been instrumental in the development and growth of the worldwide pay television industry. RCN owns 40% of Megacable through its RCN International Holdings division.

"We are extremely proud that Multichannel News International has recognized Megacable as an innovator and pioneer in the worldwide cable industry," said Paul Sigmund, Executive Vice President in charge of international operations for RCN Corporation. "We have worked diligently to provide our customers in Mexico with the highest quality cable television, telephone and Internet services and we are happy to see our efforts rewarded."

Megacable passes more than 635,000 homes in Mexico with its television system. In June 1997, the company began to offer high speed Internet access to its customers in Guadalajara over cable modems. Additionally, Megacable was recently awarded a license by the Mexican government to provide telephone service to commercial customers in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterey, in competition with Telmex, the formerly state-owned telephone monopoly.

"While the idea of cable and telephony convergence has been little more than an idea in the minds of many Mexico-based cable operators -- let alone those around the Latin American region -- Megacable has embraced this new area of business," said Janet Stilson, editor of Multichannel News International. "Its rollout of cable modems adds to our belief that Megacable is clearly a standout in its field," added Stilson.

Megacable will be presented the award at Multichannel News International's Summit, held in conjunction with the United States' National Cable Television Association Show in Atlanta on May 3, 1998.
