From Today's papers:

Intel, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and Cyrix Inc. each showed the specifics of their MMX-generation processors: chips that will give users new muscle to
run power-hungry multimedia applications. While the three designs -- planned for actual delivery to PC makers over the next year -- are similar in their basic
form, subtle differences in design make it clear that Intel's head lock on the market won't be loosened anytime soon.

So far, analysts said, the AMD and Cyrix designs don't show a microprocessor that can outperform Intel's planned P55C in the same amount of space and
for the same price.

''Intel's process technology is a year and a half ahead of everyone else,'' said Martin Reynolds, technology analyst at Dataquest Information Services in San
Jose. ''To put the company's advantage in perspective, if AMD is able to get 2 million to 4 million units out of its fab, Intel will have shipped 30 million. The
new chips won't change that dynamic, and you will see the difference in Christmas of 1997, when Intel's MMX products are powering new multimedia
machines for $120 a unit and AMD and Cyrix won't be able to match that.''
