Spots, not allowing two people to have the same alias on SI would be:
1. A convenience for those of us that don't have the time to keep checking profiles
2. A safeguard against unscrupulous impersonation; believe me, it's happened
3. No more a violation of expression than not allowing the same vanity license plate in a given state.

If you really feel strongly otherwise, perhaps you can start a discussion thread on the issue. Regardless, this is an SI thing and has nothing whatsoever to do with freedom of expression, IMO. If SI suddenly wants everyone to have numbers and no names then that's their prerogative; it's their site.

BTW, ask some SI people with stellar reputations who are being impersonated and trashed on Yahoo how they feel.
