Earl, to make sure that we are talking about the same list of supported graphic chips, i'll post it here (source: Microsoft Windows 98 Beta 3 Release Notes):
The following display adapter chipsets are supported as additional displays in this release: ATI Mach64 GX S3 764V+ (765), Trio 64V2 S3 ViRGE S3 Aurora (S3M65) Cirrus 5436,7548,5446 ATI Rage 1 and 2 (VT and greater) ATI 3D Rage Pro Trident 9685/9680/9682/9385/9382/9385-1 PCI
These drivers have DirectDraw support: ATI Mach64 S3 ViRGE
This driver has Direct3D support: S3 ViRGE
The following cards cannot be used as a primary display adapter: Permedia (Permedia NT and Permedia-2 OK) ISA/EISA cards
I picked a S3 Trio64V+ card. Nothing special. I think you can use any card with a chip from the above list as a secondary adapter. But i guess you have to read the list very carefully, e.g. a 'virge' chip is different from a 'virge/mx' chip. As far as i can see, there is no high end chip in the list, so you may run into trouble when you are looking for a card for your ADI monitor, which has a bandwidth of 200Mhz, for eaxmple S3 Virge: 135 Mhz, Cirrus GD5436 (& 5446 ?) : 135 MHz, Trident 9685: 170 MHz. of course you can use one of these 'slower' chips for your monitor, but you'll get not a very sharp picture at high resolution/high refresh rate. The best is to check out the data (bandwidth) for each listed chip (its a bit tedious) and then pick the corresponding adapter card. btw, it seems that there is really no AGP chip in the list. |
