<<<Sports developer has 'Monday Night Football' experience by Jason Ocampo
A new sports development company has been formed. Doug Whatley, executive producer of the ABC's Monday Night Football series, announced last week the formation of BreakAway Games. The new company will be comprised of the core development teams from the formerOT Sports group, including the developers responsible for ABC's Monday Night Football 98, ABC Sports College Football: Heroes of the Gridiron, and ABC Sports: Indy Racing League.
Whatley, a former director of Product Development at OT Sports and Sports Producer for MicroProse, said, "I am thrilled that we have been able to keep this talented group of developers together after the break-up of OT Sports.
"Not only do we have a great amount of game development experience and work well together but this is a group of people who truly love games."
BreakAway says it plans on developing sports games for both consoles and PCs. The company says it is currently in negotiations with several publishers. It will be based near Hunt Valley, Maryland, and its Web site can be found at www.breakawaygames.com.>> cdmag.com
I post this because Microprose use to own OT Sports.. then sold it to Disney for 250,000..Microprose has made many sports game in the past just look at the breakaway homepage and the titles listed...
In negotiations with several publishers....and located in Hunt Valley, Maryland(Microprose also is there)
Would seem much less risky to publish a 3rd party title then restart the entire Microprose sports department which no longer exists..
EA already has sports.. Sierra already has sports.. Accolade already has sports.. Gt interactive has sports.. Virgin has sports.... Aklaim has sports... Sega has sports.... Microsoft has sports.. Interplay has sports.. 3do has Baseball...
Edios I think does not have any sport brands.. Activision no sports Microprose no sports
Anybody could really pick them up as publisher..it's just interesting considering Microprose has past ties to them.. If steve race sticks to his focus of Simulation, strategy and adventure areas..then no dice..but if he is looking 1 to 2 years down the road and all the A+ games that Microprose will put out during this time making the Microprose brand strong again...then that is great leverage to jump back into another area such as sports to continue the company's growth..(at least if I was CEO I would look into it)..as long as his main focus is always QUALITY TITLES.. which seems to be the case now...
