Re: "...profitability has moderated due to a maturing personal computer market, significant investments in new businesses, and increased competitive pressures."

This is bullshhhhhhhhchweizen.

"maturing personal computer market"

Eight months ago analysts were singing praises of the HDD sector because for precisely the same reason. Laughable. They argued that consolidation in the "maturing" industry would move it away from the cutthroat, money-losing price competition of the past ... well, boy, were they proven dramatically wrong in very short order.

"significant investments in new businesses"

Intel can do it, and Microsoft can do it, why not Seagate? I happen to be of the opinion that it's super-smart for big tech companies to keep their toes in the water and their antennae up for the next big thing in their alley, and flowing money to promising ventures is a great way to go about it.

"increased competitive pressure"

Come on. Competitive pressure has always been mighty stiff.

In all this they manage to miss the REAL reason for HDD woes: disappointing demand.

God bless,
PX

P.S. The automobile industry and the television industry are "mature", if ANY industry is. They seem to manage to make money.
