Gary and Martin,
Why do some people persist in the belief that a politician's pecadilloes mean a steamed fig to most of the population? It just ain't an issue to most folks, so long as there's food on the table, Bud in the fridge and gas for the Escort (following up on your Ma and Pa Sixpack line; do you really have that impression of the American public?).

In my estimation, Bob Dole ran mainly to keep the right wing from trashing the party completely. There are too many pictures of him at Newt's heels at press conferences looking extremely uncomfortable while Newt acted like a spoiled five-year-old. I especially liked the one in which Newt admitted that he was willing to wipe out the bond market to "send a message" (READ:exercise his newfound political clout). Think Ma and Pa (whose nest egg would be completely wiped in the resulting fiasco) didn't check that out?

Clinton has out-maneuvered the right wing completely for two years, and I believe that much of the rest of the party - and the country - is pleased. The support for the right wing is deep, but extremely narrow. I for one certainly don't relish the idea of Gingrich, Armey, Gramm (or Reed, Bauer, Falwell, Robertson, Schlafley) etc. taking the reins.

As for Clinton, I suspect that in the next few years, we'll be hearing more from the Concord Coalition folks. I sure hope so! Regards, JN
