Wolfgang:
I don't know the significance of this move by Boeing,it could be that the project may rely more on the suppliers.Hope Orbi get in there somehow.
The following comment by Boeing sounds a bit peculiar,I thought.
Seattle, March 23 (Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co. said it's bringing back two-thirds of the engineers who've been working on Teledesic LLC because the Internet-in-the-sky venture no longer needs them.
Teledesic, a proposed $9 billion satellite network, has moved into the system-design phase from the conceptual-design phase, which requires more employees, Love said. The move is unrelated to Boeing's announcement on Friday that 8,200 more jobs across the company will be cut by 2000. ''This is a temporary measure,'' said Love, who declined to say what Teledesic's next phase will be after system design or when it will start.
Teledesic employment will stand at 250 after the departure of the Boeing employees and will rebound as new supplier-partners are brought in, said Teledesic spokesman Roger Nyhus.
Boeing was chosen in April 1997 as prime contractor to design, construct and launch the network. Separately, Boeing invested $100 million for a 10 percent stake in the venture. |
