This is my repost of last night to another thread. It's probably wishful thinking, but I hope that people stampede out of the market in force next year. I won't be shorting. Instead I'll be buying into the panic.
< I was just over at the year 2000 thread, and just finished reading through around ten or
so disaster/gloom/death/destruction type messages...most were hyperlinks to articles
from online publications. All sorts of predictions are postulated, ranging from people's
pacemakers going out to a major world recession. Many recommend getting out of
stocks in 1999. I have no idea right now how this is going to play out, and I can't use
myself as an example because what I'm going to do is just get the share certificates so
I'll have them in my possession. 80% of my money is in CDs, and that's the place I'll be
real cautious, I may even convert them all to cash just to be on the save side, although I
believe the cd certificates will be safe enough, but still, that's where 80 percent of my
money is, and holding green for a few months will be worth the interest loss if it lets me
sleep at night. But stocks...now that's another story. What happens if the scare mongers
get center stage next year and bombard us with gloomy predictions, all the scarier
because there will be an element of truth that would be unwise to completely deny?
People might just start to panic...and maybe the herd mentality will kick and cause a full
stampede out of the market. Is this wishful thinking? In just over a year we may be able
to pick up shares of Coke, Colgate, Clorox, and such at indecent prices. If that happens
I'll be buying right into the panic...I don't think these companies are going to go out of
business, and sooner or later Y2K problems will get fixed. What do you think? Might
we be looking at the greatest opportunity in our lifetime directly in the face? >
