Here's a comparison of some offshore drillers listed in order of stock performance over the past six months.
It includes a comparison of their estimated earnings for this quarter and this year with previous year results
and PE comparisons on trailing 12 month and projected 98 earnings:

Co. Pr 6MReturn 1Q98E/1Q97A %Incr Y97A/Y98E %Incr PE97 PE98E
RIG 52 15% .59/.27 119% 1.38/2.90 110% 37.7 17.9
NE 31 5% .37/.17 117% 1.03/1.98 92% 30.1 15.7
DO 49 -7% .65/.40 63% 1.93/3.15 63% 25.4 15.6
ESV 29 -15% .56/.26 115% 1.64/2.56 56% 17.7 11.3
MDCO 23 -22% .34/.20 70% 1.11/1.73 56% 20.7 13.3

These estimates are the IBES consensus estimates and I use them simply as
ballpark estimates to compare the companies. You can see the general pattern
of relatively strong price performance mirroring the expectations expectations
for relatively strong earnings growth. But also note that prices sometimes are out
of whack with growth expectations. Note ESV's comparatively high growth (especially
for this quarter) combined with its low PE. IMO this combination makes it
particularly attractive.
