I was surpised (shocked) by Sigma's announcement of a single chip PCI based MPEG-2 decoder. This is very difficult technology, and SIGM's R&D numbers do not reflect this type of undertaking. It makes me wonder if Sigma purchased or licensed the design from another company. However, the announcement should be good for the stock, particularly coupled with Sony's announcement that it will sell its 5X DVD-ROM drives packaged with Sigma's MPEG-2 board.

As for other suppliers of dedicated MPEG-2 chips:
C-Cube (the first single-chip solution, and probably the best chip)
SGS-Thomson (used in DirecTV boxes, but not optimized for PCs)
LSI Logic (not optimized for PCs)
IBM (Sigma uses IBM chips in its products)
Zoran (fairly new entrant)

I may have missed one or two... Others have announced but not delivered MPEG-2 decoder chips.
