Paul & all,

Picked up Prudentials "PruPicks" for March/April, their bimonthhly update of stocks on their Select List. AMAT is listed:

Excerpt: Further, given Applied's valuation, the stock presents an excellent risk/reward opportunity for investors who want to participate in the next up cycle. Equipment stocks typically react 6-9 months prior to the change in industry fundamentals. Hence, we believe that during the January-June 1998 timeframe, equipment stocks such as Applied should start reflecting a second-half 1998 DRAM(dynamic random access memory chips) supply/demand balance....

They have FY98 eps pegged at $1.53, in line with most analysts and probably in the region where we'll be this year. The real chance for an upside surprise IMO, is the FY99 eps, since they have it pegged at only $2.00.
