LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hartcourt Companies, Inc.
(Nasdaq: HRCT) announced today that it signed a proposal with Network Computer
Inc. (NCI), an Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) company, to deploy up to 500,000 network
computers throughout China and Southeast Asia.
Oracle recently developed the low-cost, low-maintenance and much-
publicized "thin client" device called the Network Computer (NC) as the ideal
terminal for a wide range of network driven information.
Hartcourt and NCI believe that the possibilities for NC applications for
education in China and Southeast Asia are beginning to emerge, and with the
implementation of the Pacific Net project every student will have an equal
chance to access and utilize the newest learning tools and the most up-to-date
data available.
Concurrently, Hartcourt entered into a letter of intent with Camro
Technology Sdn. Bhd., Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to outfit computer labs for
6,000+ primary and secondary schools in Malaysia, with the first 500 schools
to be started by August 1997. The final decision will be based upon the
results of a complete testing of the NC prototypes by the Ministry of
Education in mid-February 1997.
Hartcourt has been actively involved in China and Southeast Asia under the
leadership of its president, Dr. Alan Phan, for the past five years. The
Company has gradually shifted its focus from the manufacture and distribution
of quality pens and other writing instruments to real estate development, and
is now actively pursuing the expansion and development of China's access to
the Internet. The NCI/Hartcourt Pacific Net project will be working in
conjunction with the decision by the government of China to move towards the
electronic linking of all high schools and universities in China, forming a
singular intranet for 2.5 million classrooms, thus bringing them on line with
the world at large.
