FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 1998--Cirrus Logic
Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS.O) and 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS.O) today
announced the successful completion of joint interoperability testing
of both companies V.90, 56K(a) modems and modem chip sets. The testing
ensures compatibility between 3Com(R) U.S Robotics(R) V.90 56K modems
and Cirrus Logic's 56K Crystal Clear(TM) modem platform, and
represents an important step toward providing universal 56K
compatibility. Cirrus Logic and 3Com have been strategic partners
since November 1996 when Cirrus Logic became the first licensee of the
3Com's 56K x2(TM) technology.
"With nine out of the top-ten ISPs adopting 3Com 56K modems to
serve high-speed Internet customers, it was important to ensure
interoperability between those modems and products based on our 56K
CrystalClear modem platforms," said Karl Nordling, Cirrus Logic's vice
president of modem engineering. "The successful completion of these
tests clears the way for the immediate release of our V.90 code for
final field testing. Users who need to download large files from the
Internet can feel confident that connections based on a
3Com-to-Cirrus-based modem will operate at the maximum, reliable
speed."
Interoperability testing is a multi-step procedure that examines
modem compliance with the V.90 standard. The testing ensures that
modems successfully complete the initialization handshake procedures,
enter the data mode, correctly transfer data and re-negotiate transfer
rates in both directions. Other manufacturer options are also tested.
While interoperability testing is designed to verify conformance with
the V.90 standard, it does not test overall modem performance that is
affected by line conditions and modem design.
"Our successful testing with Cirrus Logic is an important step
towards providing universal 56K compatibility to Internet Service
Providers (ISPs), corporate customers and consumers," said Don Fotsch,
vice president of product management for 3Com's Personal
Communications Division. "The U.S. Robotics V.90 product line supports
x2 technology and the V.90 standard simultaneously, making it the most
powerful, versatile desktop modem line ever made by 3Com. Our 56K
products connect up to 80 percent faster than existing 28.8K products
and dramatically enhance the Internet experience."

(a) 56Kbps technology refers to server download speeds only and
requires compatible modems at server sites. V.90 products are capable
of 56Kbps downloads; however, due to FCC rules which restrict power
output of service providers' modems, current download speeds are
limited to 53 Kbps. Actual speeds may vary depending on line
conditions and other factors. Uploads travel at speeds up to 31.2
Kbps. Requires analog phone line compatible with 56K technology.
