The way you tell it, it sounds so... idyllic. Like a lotusland of coming of age in the Best of Times, which alas went right into the Pampers with Watergate and the oil crisis.
I was, what? Eight years old in 1969. I was not aware of the manure that came down on Bobby Kennedy and/or Rev. King. I was endlessly fascinated however with contrasty video of the Gemini cone (three different included angles on that one, sort of a Baroque climax of spacegoing decorative value before the Bauhaus terseness of Apollo) nudging into the Agena dummy (whose launch vehicle looked so perfectly like a pencil that years later I'd pick up a Mongol #2 and daydream).
I was a perfect introvert, a cyst of disconnected awareness while the Tom Wolfe world foamed and roared and gently lapped at the staunch jetties of suburban Maryland. Fear and Loathing? Electric Kool-aid? Pump House Gang? It's all a sort of lateral nostalgia for me now, stuff I read with a special twinge, the fun I coulda had.
Now I hold my grunting bubble-blowing two-month-old in hands prematurely wrinkled and creased, and I speak a quiet entreaty to those who watch from behind the cosmic two-way mirror - that my little girl may grow up in less interesting times.
