Iridium is the real thing! I was visiting a friend at one of the sites who explained it all to me and showed me the ground tracking station that he operates there. Iridium is putting up a total of 60 (Count em 60!) satellites over a three year period. I was there when # 41 & 42 were launched with a Chinese booster rocket - apparently the Russians put up 7 at a time. By the end of the year, they will have them all up in geosyncronous orbits travelling north to south. The idea is that each of us will carry a cell-like phone, except that when I turn mine on in Toronto to call you in Bangkok, my phone will track up to 7 satellites, similar to a GPS. When I place the call, the software on the satellites will decide which one will handle my call until it passes over the horizon. The call will bounce between satellites till it gets to you in Bangkok at which time we connect, then each satellites hands over the call to the one following it in the same orbit.

This technoilogy will make the "New" PCS digital phones obsolete before the Millenium - so don't buy one now, wait for an Iridium phone! It should make an excellant part of anyones porfolio.
