Corel's future depends on the right cuts
Wednesday, March 25, 1998 By Geoffrey Rowan

ADOBE Systems Inc. has been nosing around Corel Corp. with an eye to buy, again raising the possibility that there's hope for shareholders of the deeply troubled Ottawa software company.

Whether it's acquired, merged, downsized or strategically reoriented, Corel still has some management options available, although financial and technology analysts who follow the company say it has to move soon. Time's a wastin'.

One analyst, who asked not to be unidentified, says San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe is trying to put a value on Corel. The analyst pegged this value at about $2.50 (U.S.) a share. The company's stock price has been hovering around $3 (Canadian) on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
