All: I need a bit of Mac advice. My 8100/80AV tower seems to have dropped dead. Whenever it's plugged in, the fan goes on automatically, but nothing seems to work to turn the machine actually on -- I just see a black monitor with a green light no matter what buttons I push on the unit or the keyboard, and there are no startup chimes.
This is the machine I use when my PB 3400c/240 goes to the shop and which I sometimes use, too, for multitasking. The only other working Mac here is much slower. I do need stuff that's on the 8100/80 AV's hard drive. But other than that, I'm not sure it will pay to repair it. Could be a motherboard problem, and replacing that is very expensive. No, I don't have it under AppleCare.
I did need a faster machine for backup when the PB is away, but was thinking I need a PC for stock trading and didn't want to bite that bullet. I always want the fastest possible machine and I know new fastest Macs are due to be released very soon, right?
What do you all advise in regard to the 8100/80 AV? Should I dump it and remove the HD, seeing if I can install it into a new machine? Can I revive it inexpensively? Any thoughts welcome. Linda |
