In a book written in the early 60s, Sagan, along with a Russian cosmologist, discussed (in one chapter) the possibility that a legendary Sumerian god was actually a visiting extraterrestrial! This preceded von Daniken's "ancient astronaut" speculation by about 12 years.

The floaters on Jupiter sounds more like something that Arthur C. Clarke would've written.
