Glenayre Receives $3 Million Contract For Expansion Of China's Nationwide Paging Network BEIJING, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS - news) announced today that it received a $3 million contract from China's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT) for the expansion of China's nationwide roaming paging network. Glenayre will provide three complete FLEX-based high speed paging systems for three provincial capital cities of the network's second phase: Guiyang in Guizhou Province; Xining in Qinghai Province; and Lhasa in Xizang Province.
''We're pleased to be able to provide China's network with the most advanced platform available,'' said Chinnee Tong, director of sales and deputy general manager for Glenayre's China Operations. ''Glenayre's advanced infrastructure provides high capacity, high speed paging capability today with the ability to support the future service needs of China's market.''
When the second phase is complete in April, all 31 of China's capital cities will be linked. MPT plans to eventually expand the network to more than 300 cities. In October 1997, Glenayre activated high speed paging systems in eleven provincial capital cities for the public launch of the nationwide network, which is now delivering advanced numeric, alphanumeric and roaming services.
The FLEX roaming capability of China's network is made possible by the Inter-switch Paging Network Protocol (IPNP). Based on Glenayre's WMtp inter- switch protocol, IPNP was developed jointly by the MPT and Glenayre as China's nationwide networking standard.
Every Glenayre system within China's network is fully upgradable to support narrowband PCS protocols including ReFLEX. Glenayre's high speed paging system includes the GL3000 Wireless Messaging Switch, GL-C2000 Controller, N2000 Network Manager and GL-T8000 series transmitters.
