Indonesia still showing signs of deep problems. . .

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Police and soldiers used sticks and clubs today to beat back rock-throwing students who tried to carry an anti-government demonstration beyond the confines of their university. At least 49 people were injured, witnesses said.

The fighting in Solo, 250 miles east of Jakarta, broke out hours after the United States announced it would send $56 million in food and medical aid to ease the suffering of millions of Indonesians impoverished by their worst economic crisis in 30 years.

The clash was the most violent in a month long series of campus protests over President Suharto's failure to reverse a devastating plunge in the value of Indonesia's currency. [more]
