Radiologists would have one believe that Xrays tell the whole story.
In the real world the surgeons are looking for clinical improvement and Xrays (radiographic information) is a source of information to point towards where a problem exists that is reflected in clinical/functional performance at the injury site. Keep in mind that if clinical function (improvment in strenght and pain reduction) is the same for both procedures the surgeon could care less about Xray evidence other than to note that it is less reliable in the case of assessing IPO growth.
