Mitsubishi Orders High Energy Scanner from SMS;
SMS System Believed to be Mitsubishi Materials' First CT Machine

PR Newswire, Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at 10:57

AUSTIN, Texas, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific Measurement Systems
(BB: SCMS) (SMS) announced today that it had received a
purchase order from Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (MMC) through its
representative in Japan, Kyokuto Boeki Kaishi Limited. The SMARTScan(TM)
Computed Tomography (CT) system that has been ordered by MMC will use a linear
accelerator X-ray source, typical of high energy applications. The primary
use for the SMS scanner will be the inspection of blades used in turbine
engines.
"The CT system we will deliver to Mitsubishi Materials will combine high
energy X-ray with our new 'close-packed' detector technology," said Matt
Gutierrez, VP of Sales and Marketing for Scientific Measurement Systems.
"This is an exciting combination for SMS as we intend to increase our presence
in the high end of the CT market. SMS is in the unique position of being a
'one-stop shopping' source for the full range of CT needs, from low-energy
microfocus applications, to parts that require high-energy linear
accelerators." Typically, linear accelerator technology is employed for
creating more powerful radiation sources required for very large or very dense
objects. The high energy is needed to provide the x-ray penetration through
the object required to create CT images.
Mr. Gutierrez added, "This little company based in Austin continues to
demonstrate the ability to work with some of world's leading corporations, and
MMC certainly qualifies. This says volumes about our technology." MMC is a
member of the Mitsubishi companies, a multi-billion dollar collection of
independent corporations bearing the Mitsubishi name. The Mitsubishi
companies include leaders in manufacturing, banking, insurance, transport, and
trading. The CT system will be installed at MMC's Central Research Institute
near Tokyo.
SMS designs, manufactures, and sells industrial CT equipment and services
to a worldwide customer base. The company is a recognized leader in the
development and commercialization of CT technology. CT provides a fully
non-destructive method for creating 2-D and 3-D data sets of an object,
allowing the user to examine both internal and external features. SMS is a
public company traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol SCMS. SMS is
based in Austin, Texas, and can be reached at 512-837-4712.
