Hi Mike,
Just a couple thoughts on your questions about the air traffic control system. The piece of the system that controls radar is run on early 1980's vintage (when I was new at IBM!!) 308x IBM mainframes. The FAA has been told by IBM that because they don't have the microcode folks that worked on those machines around anymore, that IBM cannot guarantee Y2K integrity for those machines, and that they should be replaced. Last I heard, the FAA said they may NOT be able to make the deadline here. As for what replaces them, my guess would be more IBM gear. These machines probably run MVS, to replace them with machines running NT would give the FAA nowhere near the reliability it needs. Don't know about UNIX, but my guess is that even UNIX does not have the robust capabilities that MVS does. Anyway, thought I'd throw in my two cents....

John
