I'll have to read Nance's book.
I remember in the early Nineties there was a newsbite on the Napa geyser. I forget what town it was in - St Helena? It gave it's "Quake a'comin" signal, and nothing happened.
I also remember that there was some sort of - electric? radio? sensor that went apedung a few hours before Loma Prieta. It was in the right time&place by accident. Parkfield's pouting spell 9where the sensor is now active) has denied us the opportunity to retest that method.
Earthquakes are now where hurricanes were 80 years ago. Unpredictable Leviathans of the vasty deep, striking with little or no warning.
Rock is weak and noisy. It'll take time money, better computers and deeper sensors. But we will learn the sounds of unhappy rock; hear its mutterings at the moment where it decides to just park its Suburban in the middle of the gridlocked bridge and start walking.
