Some news about Teledesic (retyped from SkyReport):

Boeing, as part of its restructuring, eliminated nearly two thirds of its workforce involved in the Teledesic satellite venture. "With the layoffs, Teledesic's main competitor, Motorola may be poised to get a piece of the Internet in the sky project, according to this weeks issue of Aviation Week and Space Technology. Boeing executives insist they are strongly committed to Teledesic, but nearly a year after it won the prime contract to build the project, Boeing has yet to determine just how and where the 288 satellite system will be built."

I think Loral needs a better answer to the "net in the sky" than cyberstar... I don't see why they couldn't do one using technology nearly exactly like Globalstar (ie: requireing base stations, rather than putting the whole network in orbit) except using all the bandwidth for data instead of voice... this would have the advantage over Teledesic of being mobile and not requiring aiming, be much cheaper and provide better connectivity than everyone not close to a city can currently get...and if they charge by the byte, it could be cheap. (512 Kbytes/second both ways is all most businesses and consumers need, IMHO) Anyone know a technical reason why this isn't feasible?
