It's sorta another DELL, but in a different industry sector.
Actually, a more apt comparison might be Intel. By the end of the summer, LU is likely to be far and away the world's most dominant provider of telecom equipment. If Dell, Gateway, and IBM all buy processors from Intel in order to compete against each other, the world's communications providers will all be buying equipment from LU to try to outdo one another. Lucent is in a win-win situation for at least the next five years.
Most of the analysts I've seen talk about the company recently point out that Lucent is likely to go on a buying spree come June or July, which will only increase its stature in the world market.
Anytime is a good time to get into Lucent. It appears that management has a very good grasp on the company's present business and a clear vision for its future. Having spun off from AT&T, Lucent is no stranger to the dog-eat-dog telecommunications business. What's more, a couple months back a major financial rag did a story on major companies and the percentage of their annual budget devoted to R&D. Lucent ranked very highly in this report, which tells me they're not content to kick back and collect revenue off existing products.
What's not to like? If you wanna think about Dell in comparison to Lucent, think about all the schmucks who hesitated to get into Dell a couple years ago because the price had risen too far too fast.
