It depends on whether it is a matched market, or whether there is an
intermediary. I knew once, but can't remember if the Nasdaq is the
first or the second ? If there are market makers then they might
take stocks onto their books. Sure they are trading, and making
buys=sells, and vice-versa, but they intend to hold the stock
short-term rather than being investors. In such instances the stock
that someone sells, goes through a buy:sell before it ends up with the
final purchaser. I don't think I've explained this at all well, so
perhaps someone can help ? (Including help ME to understand it better !)
