Kate McEnroe, president of American Movie Classics, predicted at the March 18 Kagan conference on Cable TV Values & Finance that digital is "really coming in two waves." The first wave "is expanding programming opportunities," especially for niche services, she said. The second involves saturating the marketplace with digital boxes through box "sponsorships" or simply because the price of the units is coming down. "In the next 3-5 years, I believe digital could be in 80% of homes," she added.

Digital equipment vendors agreed that digital delivery would happen this year, both in cable and over-the-air television. For example, Scientific-Atlanta Inc. executives said the vendor has shipped its first five Explorer 2000 set-top systems, while Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc. executives made it clear that their company wants in on the cable business.
