Phil,
I think Jobs will take the position if he can't find a replacement that he feels will carry on the work he started. I personally hope he stays on at least until Apple is on very firm ground. I think he will.
Ever since the point that Jobs took over, I decided not to listen to rumors, but rather, to judge Jobs and Apple by the official company statements and interviews with individuals that are in the inner circle. I chose to do this because I had a hunch that Jobs detested that sort of thing. I have not regretted my choice, as it has spared me the fretting that has been so prevalent on SI today. It's all based on rumor.
What I have seen is focus, execution, timing, charisma and leadership. Though you and I are among the few that believes Amelio did some good things for Apple, just think where we'd be if he had been running the company for the last 9 months. The man is devoid of charisma and he seemed to no nothing about working the media. In these areas, Jobs is on a par with P.T. Barnum.
I agree with Leonardo. Apple will not release any news before they are ready. We should all just sit back and watch the master do his thing.
Regards,
