Well, let's see...Avid

I work with Avid Media Composers frequently, and they are indeed The Standard in Off-line editing for Television, Commercials, and now Film. And, with recent advancements in technology, the lines between Off-line and On-line editing have become blurred. The latest version of Avid software has good CG capabilites, better controls, and the extensive list of 3rd party plug-ins means that sales of the newest version (7.0) should continue very well. There are competitors, but Avid has remained on top. They have trounced Sony several times when Sony had tried to bring out competing editors.

But as an investment, I would wait for a correction before getting in. The price has run up quite a bit as of late. And I don't see it going much further. Avid is primarily a Professional name, and is not consumer focused. So, growth is mostly limited to those who can afford the $100,000+ it takes to get a Media Composer. Sure some Apple computers ship with low-level Avid software, but I don't think they can be making too much money on this.

Anyway, I'd wait for a correction, then get in long (hold for at least 2 years).
