Pat, Alcatel's ATM switches could be classified as pure ATM "giant" switches. These live deep in the provider backbone taking ATM in (usually 155Mb/s or 622Mb/s or 2.4Gb/s) and switching ATM out (at same speeds). ASND or CSCO or NN or any other of the data networkers we are familiar with provide ATM edge switching. These switches live at the so called edge of the ATM cloud. Incoming is anything from 56K frame relay, or T1, or T3 or maybe even 155 ATM. These can be switched to like speed lines if the destination is local to that switch, or can be sent up into the cloud (usually on a highspeed uplink, 155 or 622), if the destination is remote.

Alcatel may very well want to become a player in this edge switching arena. ASND provides a purely complimetary product line, from an ATM viewpoint. Of course RAS is another story.

I guess I just don't think LU is a likely suitor any more, unlike most on this thread.
