Yeah, that was a memorable disaster. What I found saddest was the school teacher's aged parents looking uncomprehendingly at the sky. And what was that line Peggy Noonan found for Reagan's speech, "we have loosed the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God" or some such thing? I wonder where she found that.

The most memorable space event for me was on my 18th birthday. I was driving through the Cajun part of Louisiana. I stopped for gas, and the locals were chattering away in their French patois. When I walked into the office to pay my bill there was a TV with an astronaut stepping onto the Moon. I hadn't listened to the news for a week, so it came as a surprise to me.
