Brazil to open B-band cell bids for Rio on Tuesday

Reuters, Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at 20:52

BRASILIA, March 25 (Reuters) - The Brazilian government
plans next Tuesday to open bids for a concession to operate
B-band cellular services in Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo
states, officials said.
A spokesman for the Communications Ministry said envelopes
containing the proposals for the so-called area No.3 concession
should be opened Tuesday morning.
"Tomorrow we will be publishing a notice saying that the
area three bids will be opened on Tuesday," said Francisco
Mendonca, the chief spokesman for the ministry.
He also said that the government expects to sign a contract
with the Tess group for a concession license to provide B-band
services in non-metropolitan Sao Paulo state by Monday.
"It could happen tomorrow or Friday or on Monday," Mendonca
said. Tess, which includes Sweden's Telia, won its appeal
Wednesday seeking to overturn its disqualification in bidding
for the so-called B-band area No.2 license.
The decision by a Brazilian high court cleared the way for
the government to proceed with its long-delayed B-band
privatization process. The B-band sell-off is part of Brazil's
effort to privatize its massive telecommunications sector.
