Michael, that's because the market sees a brighter future for Dell than Compaq. Future is the operative word. Dell's sales are growing more rapidly, Dell certainly has a much higher rate of return on assets due to its superb inventory handling system, Dell isn't exposed to rapid obsolescence the way Compaq is, and Dell isn't playing in the cut-throat sub $1,000 range. Finally, Dell is tops in customer satisfaction. It all adds up to a company that is in a position to put the screws to its competitors. Paul van Wijk posted this link earlier, but I think it would be well for you to read it very carefully and ponder exactly what is being said by the company:

infobeat.com

Notice that while Dell's competitors feel they are engaged in a price war Dell feels no effect.

Regards,

Paul
