Bankruptcy (In Canada, it is final. In US it has to be chapter 7 bankruptcy.)is a reason for write off. You do not have to sell it to claim a loss. But you can also do it next year when you made too much money on stock or take off up to $3000 on regular income this year. You have to do it on the long form 1040.
