03/26 8:40A (DJ) Intel Delays Chip Plant Opening For 2 Years - Newspaper
Story 1510 (INTC, I/SEM, N/DJN, N/DJWI, N/WEI, M/TEC, P/DCO, P/DSE, R/CA...)
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)--Intel Corp. (INTC) has halted construction of a $1.3
billion chip plant near Alliance Airport and will delay opening of the new
facility for two years, a newspaper report said Thursday.
The 530-acre site will lie dormant for the next 12 months, company officials
told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
That will allow the company, stung by slow sales and sagging profits, to
reconfigure the plant to produce the new-generation 300-millimeter silicon
wafers, Intel spokesman Howard High said Wednesday.
Speaking from company headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., High said that
product will replace the 200-millimeter silicon wafer that is now the industry
standard and give the plant a 30% increase in production efficiency.
"The options were to continue with existing technology or moving on the
technology that is two generations in the future," High said. "Intel has
decided long ago that we didn't want to go to a new technology and have to
retrofit the plant."
But the company remains committed to the project in which the company has
already invested more than $75 million, he said.
