Cisco Retools Router Lineup In Layer 3 Era

March 26, 1998

Internet Week via NewsEdge Corporation : Cisco is
coming out with a Layer 3 switch, but that doesn't mean
IT managers have to give up on conventional routers. In
fact, the routers are getting better, too.

Cisco's new Layer 3 switch, the Catalyst 8500, will route
data at very high speeds. But the company that made its
name in routers also will continue to improve its
mainstay 7500 and 7200 router families over the next
year, carefully extolling the advantages they offer over
the newfangled switches.

This week, Cisco will roll out mainframe channel
connections for the 7200. Later this year, the 7200 will
get packet-over-Sonet capabilities, voice over IP, Gigabit
Ethernet and better token-ring support.
