K.D. Aha! If I were a mask house, I would view the availability of leading edge processes to fabless designers as very very good news. I'd also be scrambling like mad to build Taiwan regional capacity. (Most new foundries are going up on Taiwan.)
The "Aha" refers to my sudden understanding of why DPMI would be so anxious to take over the inhouse photomask operations of one of the big Korean DRAM makers also (OK, so it's not Taiwan, but similar principles must apply, no?)
Some time ago, I also had read that the photomask business had been consolidating, and would continue consolidating, into fewer and fewer hands...with an oblique reference to an inability to keep up.. In your opinion, would this be part of the same game...that is, is the growing complexity of the the designs, as well as the necessity of maintaining a capability to produce an increasing NUMBER of designs ---is that whole process driving the business into fewer (like 3?) remaining companies? Thanks so much for insights!! TSO
