Paul, I'm thinking about signing up with RT Internet Trader/NAQ too but I've heard many people talking about the poor performance. So I ran a TraceRoute from my ISP (IBM, which is pretty fast to all other sites most of the time..) to another popular web site - Yahoo in California. Then a trace to sharon.naq.com in London Ontario Canada. BTW - I'm located about 40 miles north of Boston.

I realize that you are saying that there is a major break in service right now, but if we monitor this path over time we should be able to figure out just why the connection to the NAQ machines are so slow.

It's really not the number of hops (although it doesn't help) it's the probability that the more hops you have to go across, the more chance you have of crossing a machine which will create a bottleneck at any one point in time. Right now 18 hops looks too many for a "REAL TIME" quote system, at least from my location. You could have great performance across all those hops most of the time, but all you need is to have one machine have a problem then you have a bottleneck and people running RT Internet Trader scream that things were runnning fine and then all of a sudden "my trades hung"..or worse, connection is lost.

I'll wait till this fiber problem is fixed...and then do another traceroute...we'll see then if the hops have changed, at least from IBM's view of the world here in NH.
