ALL: Approval for Proscar
Merck<MRK.N>says FDA OK's Proscar for prostate use
WEST POINT, Pa., March 26 (Reuters) - Merck & Co Inc said
Thursday that after a six-month review the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration cleared the company's Proscar drug to reduce the
need for prostate surgery and the risk of developing acute
urinary retention.
Proscar is the first medication to reduce the risk of
developing acute urinary retention or benign prostatic
hyperplasia, Merck said in a news release.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition that
affects more than half of men age 60 and older. Prostate
surgery to correct it is the second most commonly performed
surgery on older men.

Merck said a 4-year trial comparing Proscar with a placebo
found that the drug reduced by 51 percent the combined risk of
prostate surgery and acute urinary retention. The drug was also
found to reduce by 55 percent the need for prostate surgery and
reduce by 57 percent the risk of developing acute urinary
retention, which occurs suddenly and is treated through
insertion of a catheter.
Researchers found that these reductions in risk associated
with therapy with Proscar occurred as early as four months into
the trial and were maintained throughout the four-year study.

Located at the base of the bladder and surrounding the
urethra (a narrow tube that drains urine from the bladder), the
normal prostate is generally the size of a walnut. Enlarged
prostates can gradually compress the urethra and cause a range
of urinary symptoms including frequent urination, reduced urine
flow, and nighttime urination. In a very small percentage of
men, such urinary problems may lead to infection, major
bleeding and kidney damage.
