IBM chose MSFT for the OS and Intel for the chips. That's about 50% of the story right there. Of course they chose those companies partly because they saw a core competence there, in companies that were already in a market that IBM needed to enter, the PC market.

So they entered, with their clout, and they chose these two as partners. They got tremendous leverage out of IBM (which we in the business then saw as selling out to the Devil.) Now they both have monopolies, based on sometimes mediocre but ubiquitous technology.

OK. A sad lesson for all of us techs that thought building the better mousetrap was the way to go, and went down the other road.
