Sonny, thanks for the article about UIS and HP. Always thinking about the possibility of companies having to downsize, or hire, when these kinds of things take place. I don't know where Unysis does their PC's and entry level servers, but I do know HP's server and, I think PC divisions are here. I also know that Unysis' large server division is here. Downsizing or hiring can affect me in two ways:

1. I work in computers. More jobs in the area is good, less is bad, if I ever need to go looking. Sounds like UIS - HP move can't hurt Silicon Valley, maybe it's a wash.

2. Adding to the work force where I live can add to my house value. :-) OTOH, it makes for more traffic. :-(

You know, the stepping aside of Andy Grove was handled very poorly by the press today. I first heard of it from my wife who heard it on the radio. She said the reporter said, in so many words, "Andy Grove has resigned." The reporter said not a word about the fact that he was remaining as Chairman of the Board. If someone says the reporter didn't have all the info, that's BS. When my wife heard the news, it had been out about two hours. They also should not use the word resign in such a move as Andy id doing. The correct term is step aside. Another thing you may find hard to believe is that the San Jose Mercury News, the Silicon Valley newspaper, has always been negative about high tech, at least for the 25 years I've been here. I should know because I work for a high tech company, and they've always managed to put negative spin on our news. Same with Intel news. I've even asked my wife to cancel it, because I get the vast majority of my info nowadays from the Internet, including SI. Oh well, I guess their sports section and TV listings are OK.

Last thought, some think Andy stepping aside is a negative. It's not, in fact it's absolutely normal in this, or any other business. There is a succession of CEO's who move on to Chairman as they are replaced by a COO, or an executive VP, or other person who has been in the process of being groomed for years, for the CEO position. This has obviously been Craig Barrett, for some time now.
