Let's do some math. Intel will probably make somewhere around 90 million microcomputers this year (maybe more). AMD might make around 8 million to 10 million (IF things go better than they have been going) this year. So looking backwards, we see that AMD won't crack 10% of the total market this year. AND AMD gets to play at the bottom of the food chain rather than the top. Not much sales yet in portables, servers, workstations. So I'm confused about the math. I suspect that AMD is getting maybe 35% of the home pc market, though. With the "success" of AMD come some serious dollar losses that are beginning to pile up. They don't go away, you finance them with borrowed bucks, one way or another.
