Tony,>>>With all due respect, your opinion of Craig Barrett seems to change about as often as I change clothes. Any reason for the wavering sentiment?<<<
Let me explain. Again, using baseball as metaphor. IMO Craig Barrett has the potential to maintain a .300 batting average, produce 100 ribbies, and has the power to hit 25-30 homeruns. Using current metrics, that is worth $5-10M a year.
Can he hit .400, drive in 150 runs, hit over 60 homeruns and win the triple crown? There is no way you can tell. They don't play baseball on paper. They have to go out on the field and execute.
In the same way, I know of some of Craig Barrett'e academic background, B.S.,Phd., Stanford University. I also know some of Barrett's academic peers (although not Stanford) who knew of him - Material Science - I believe)in college.
I also know from the public record of his egalatarian nature; flying coach, conventional automobile, no reserved parking lot, or fancy office.
I also know from listening to Andy Grove, Paul Engel, Mrs. Barrett of Craig Barrett's personal integrity, work ethic, and self effacing nature. Heard Andy Grove say that Craig is more disciplined and structured than Andy himself; Paul Engel has told me of his contributions in the work place; and his wife was heard to have said that when she first met him, she suspected he was maybe a night manager at a Radio Shack.
But again, this game is not played on paper. He has to go out and perform - and therein I have some questions that are on a par with does he have the drive to win the Triple Crown ? - will he be able to handle the limelight as he goes chasing after Ruth/Maris record ? Will the ghost of Ted Williams (Andy Grove) be too much for this seemingly academically oriented person. Does he have the necessary imagination and daring of Steve Jobs, the ruthlessness of Bill Gates, and wisdom of Jack Welsh?
Or, is he going to be unlike any of the others and develop a completely new standard by which we measure CEOs.
This is NO Kim Edwards(former CEO of Iomega) here.
I sincerely wish him (I mean Craig Barrett - not KE)luck on the job - but in the end he has to perform.
Capish (sp?) ?.

BTW - I'm sorry to hear about your sanitary issue. You should really change your clothes more often - If you don't mind me saying. |
